MathCounts at CAER

K'nex ping-pong launchers

On Friday night March 25th 200 MathCounts winners from middle schools in counties throughout the Commonwealth spent the evening at the UK Center for Applied Energy Research performing fun science experiments with UK undergraduate Energy Club members. While the next day was spent in heated competition to become the state MathCounts finalist, from 6:00 - 9:00 pm that night, the students built miniature dams; designed and launched aerodynamic paper airplanes and edible race cars; created K'nex ping-pong launchers, and civil engineered their way toward finely built spaghetti and marshmallow towers.

One of the state MathCounts organizers, Darin Hensley, P.E. EA Partners, PLC, approached CAER about creating an event for the students. The newly-formed UK Chapter of the Kentucky Energy Club planned the event and supervised the students' activities.

In addition, local high school students served as escorts/tour guides to accompany their younger piers around the event. We hope that both the high school and college students serve as young examples to the middle school students.

MathCounts is a national enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes middle school math achievement through grassroots involvement.
