In October of 2007 the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER) celebrated its 30th year as a stand alone research center. A dinner was held at the Hyatt Regency in Lexington, Kentucky to celebrate those who made the financial and political decisions three decades ago to create this lab. Former Governor, later U.S. Senator Wendell Ford, received the Founders Award. Former Secretaries William Sturgill, Charles Haywood and David Drake and Former Dean of the UK College of Engineering, Jim Funk all received Distinguished Service Awards. Former Secretary of Energy, William Sturgill also received a Mining Hall of Fame Award from the UK Department of Mining Engineering.
In October of 2007 the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER) held a momentous event. In celebration of the lab's 30th anniversary, a day-long energy summit was held for the public on October 11th, followed by a dinner that evening for the staff, founders, and longtime friends of the center.

In celebration of CAER's 25th anniversary, an energy summit was held in October of 2002 at the Lexington Hyatt Regency. Nationally known speakers were there to discuss various aspects of the current energy picture.
The day-long summit was attended by those from industry, government, and academia. The speakers' energy related topics ranged from an intense look at fossil fuels and their perhaps unrelated relationship with global warming, to an environmental attorney's assessment of the state's mining operations.
From 1993-2002 the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER) held a two-week high school internship program each summer for exceptional high school students from around the state. These pictures are of field trips, lab experiences, student presentations and graduation day.

The International Ash Utilization Symposia are held in Lexington, KY. It was organized by the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER). The World of Coal Ash (WOCA) Conference was first held in 2005. It is co-sponsored by the CAER and ACAA organizations.

The KY NanoMat Workshop was held during 2003 and also during 2004. This annual university/industrial workshop on materials in nanotechnology is co-sponsored by the University of Kentucky and University of Louisville.

CAER scientists have participated in the Rogers Scholars program in Somerset, Kentucky. Named after the U.S. Representative from that district, Harold Rogers, the program takes high school students from the area and trains them in professional areas of their interests for one week each summer.
