  • The US Department of Energy recently announced five awards totaling $3 Million to improve the energy efficiency of the U.S. mining industry. The largest award was given to UK for a project entitled "Advanced Surface-Enhancement Technology for Decreasing Wear and Corrosion." Daniel Tao (Mining Engineering) is the PI and Rick Honaker (Mining Engineering) and B.K. Parekh (CAER) are Co-PI's. The total award will be $1.25 Million with $500k going to Oak Ridge National Lab and $750k going to UK, split 70/30 between Mining Engineering and CAER, respectively.

The goal of the project is to develop an advanced high-density infrared (HDI)-based surface enhancement technology that will decrease the wear and corrosion rates of mineral processing equipment by an order of magnitude.
