Microscopy is a valuable tool for qualitatively evaluating the dissolution characteristics of various types of biomass and biomass model compounds. Given the vast number of potential solvents which could be investigated, a small scale, hands off approach to experimentation was necessary to acquire enormous amounts of data quickly and efficiently. This method allows for the development of a qualitative understanding of the role temperature plays on dissolution as well as building knowledge of the selectivity each solvent possesses in interacting with the various biopolymers which constitute Lignocellulosic biomass.
