The various electrolyte technologies for lithium and Lithium ion battery systems will be reviewed and discussed. The scope of the review includes the early work under Professor C. Tobias at the University of California, Berkeley. The events surrounding the discovery of conductive plastics and how this development triggered the developments that led to the current lithium-ion battery system. The discussion concentrates on Lithium Ion Technology development as well as current practices. Role assigned additives to the Lithium-Ion electrolyte helped increase performance and cycle life as did the development of new carbon-based anode and high energy, long cycle life cathode materials. Time permitting, comments will include the promising new lithium-air based systems, polymer electrolytes and ionic liquids.
