Abstract:
KiOR is a privately funded, $200MM startup company based in Houston Texas. We are commercializing a proprietary process for converting biomass to synthetic crude oil, called ReCrude. The overall process is based on two well-established oil refining processes: FCC (fluid catalytic cracking) for conversion of the large, condensed biomass molecules (lignin, cellulose, hemicellulose), and hydrotreating (HT) for stabilization and finishing. KiOR's innovations consist of (a) proprietary modifications to the FCC and HT processes, specific to operational requirements for biomass-derived feeds and intermediates, and (b) proprietary catalysts to be used in these processes. KiOR's catalysts have been developed in-house, using our deep knowledge of the chemistry of biomass conversion, in combination with state-of-the-art in-house testing capabilities. While the composition of our proprietary catalysts cannot be divulged, the development approach, and an overview of our in-house testing capabilities, can be shared.
