Abstract:

CAER and the College of Engineering have been recently awarded an NSF grant to support the creation of a research center-based mentoring program designed to increase the participation of African Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans in engineering. In this seminar, the rationale for such program will be explained, along with its objectives and the strategy that will be used to reach the latter. In short, incoming freshmen and first year graduate students from the aforementioned groups – with emphasis on individuals interested in pursuing an academic career in engineering – will be recruited into this program, through which they will be supported, mentored, and involved in CAER-based research and outreach in a way that will allow them to acquire and develop the skills they need to succeed.
