CAER's Recent Workshop on CCBs a Success

Experts from around the world (and here at CAER) taught a two day short course on ash use and management. The attendees learned the most up to date news on beneficiation, ccbs in the construction environment, current regulatory issues, and much more.

GrafTech International - 125 Years of Carbon and Graphite Materials Science - from Arc Carbons to Smart Phones

 

Abstract

GrafTech International was founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 1886 as the National Carbon Company and in 2011 celebrates 125 years as a carbon and graphite materials science company, with annual sales in excess of $1 billion and sixteen manufacturing plants located worldwide. GrafTech today manufactures a wide variety of carbon and graphite raw materials and finished products and services a broad variety of markets including steel making, solar, semiconductor, consumer electronics, oil and exploration, fuel cells and batteries.

The lecture will discuss highlights of GrafTech's 125 year history of invention and commercialization of carbon and graphite materials, covering the topics of arc carbons, brushes, dry cell batteries, electrodes for electric steel making, nuclear graphite, carbon fibers, alkaline batteries, fuel cells, graphite for the solar industry and heat spreaders for Smart Phones.

The American Carbon Society, supported by grants from the Asbury Graphite Mills, Inc., sponsors this lecture series in North American Universities. The lecture series is in honor of George D. Graffin, who was a pioneer in the natural graphite industry. Each year the Society selects a lecturer who has made distinguished contributions to carbon science and engineering. The lecture is available to North American universities, by arrangement with the lecturer.

 

The Speaker

Based at GrafTech's Parma, Ohio headquarters and R&D center, Dr. Norley directs the company's Advanced Energy group, which works on materials for electronic thermal management, LED lighting, fuel cells and energy storage applications. His work on the development of natural graphite heat spreaders led to a new market for GrafTech in consumer electronic applications, including plasma display panels, laptop computers and a new generation of handheld devices and smart phones. Sales of natural graphite materials for these applications represent one of the most rapid R&D-to-commercialization successes in GrafTech's history. Dr. Norley and his group have received five R&D 100 awards: in 2003 for heat sinks; 2004 for SPREADERSHIELD™ heat spreaders; 2007 for GRAFCELL® Flow Field Plates; 2009 for GRAFIHX® Flexible Heat Exchangers and in 2011 for the SS1500 family of ultrathin flexible graphite materials for smart phone applications. His group has also won and executed over $20 million in U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Department of Defense and Ohio Third Frontier grants in the areas of electronic thermal management, fuel cells, nanocomposites, heat exchangers and lithium ion batteries. Dr. Norley has presented at numerous conferences and workshops and has been published extensively in his field. He has been awarded 20 US patents with one hundred and twenty three published worldwide patents and applications. In 2005, he was named Senior Corporate Fellow, GrafTech's highest scientific position.

Dr Norley achieved his B.S. degree in Metallurgy from Imperial College, London, in 1980, and his Ph.D. degree in Metallurgy from the same University in 1985.

Distinguished Japanese Scientists Tour CAER

CAER was visited by international academics recently. Professors from Akita University and Kyoto University saw the breadth of our research and discussed coal liquefaction with the lab's experts.

Power UP Kentucky Web Site is on UKNOW News

"Power UP" Provides Resources to Kentucky Teachers and Students - from UKNOW: The University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER) and the UK Center for Visualization and Virtual Environments (Vis Center) have worked together to develop an iPad app and website dedicated to energy education called "Power UP." The app and website are specifically designed for high school teachers throughout the Commonwealth to use in their curriculum, as well as to serve as a resource for students who want to learn more about energy usage.

 



Story on CAER Appears in Trends Journal

"HOME GROWN OIL" is an article about "drop-in" replacements for transportation fuels that are made from organic trash or excreted by algae.  The article, appearing in the Spring 2012 The Trends Journal issue, features the University of Kentucky's Center for Applied Energy Research's project concerned with the utilization of waste CO2 and heat from a coal-fired power plant to cultivate algae.  The algae could then be processed into fuel and other products while lowering CO2 emissions at the plant.

New Patent for CAER Researchers

Congratulations to Uschi Graham, (former CAER researcher) Rajesh Khatri, and Burt Davis. They recently authored the patent In-situ nanoparticle formation in polymer clearcoats. Toyota sponsored the R&D phase of the project that led to the invention. The University of Kentucky is the Assignee and Toyota will receive one complementary license.

Invention summary:

Methods and compositions for forming a transparent clear coat characterized by a desired property, such as a color effect, resistance to UV light-induced degradation and/or scratch resistance, on a substrate are detailed according to embodiments of the invention. Particular compositions and methods for producing a transparent clear coat layer include nanoparticles formed in-situ during curing of a transparent clear coat.

 

 



UK's SEAM Students Learn about CAER

The SEAM program brings together undergraduate business and engineering students to participate in an integrated program in which students learn from both disciplines. These scholars are eligible to enroll in specially-designed courses that expand their professional horizons by working in cross-functional teams with other high achievement-oriented students. A group of these students met with Director Rodney Andrews, learned about algae use for CO2 reduction, and toured the new renewable fuel and energy storage building yesterday.



Crocker Is Keynote Speaker

#UKCAER Biofuels & Environmental Catalysis Associate Director Mark Crocker gave a keynote talk entitled "Synergy of LNT and Cu-chabazite SCR Catalysts in Coupled LNT-SCR Systems?" for CLEERS (Cross-Cut Lean Exhaust Emissions Reduction Simulations) lean NOx trap working group (a group of about 50 people from companies and universities in the US and Europe).



UK CAER Hosts Coal Combustion Products Utilization and Management Workshop

New Carbon Capture PostDoc Position Open at UK CAER

The University of Kentucky, Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER) anticipates adding a post-doctoral engineering/scientist position in the carbon capture/sequestration and energy areas.  The new position will be involved in studies related to electrochemical applications for the treatment of displaced brine originating from CO2 sequestration sites.

UK CAER Lands in Applied Physics Letters Most Cited Category

The University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research Carbon Material's research group has made the top 50 most cited papers in Applied Physics Letters

As stated by the journal web site, "This collection represents the most highly cited papers ever published in Applied Physics Letters. These articles stand as a testament to the hard work and outstanding contributions of the authors to the applied physics field and to the scientific community at large."

Lead author Dali Qian along with other UK CAER scientists Rodney Andrews and Terry Rantell and former University of Kentucky scientist, now at NCSU (North Carolina State University) Elizabeth Dickey are pleased and delighted with the recognition.

The published paper is Load transfer and deformation mechanisms in carbon nanotube-polystyrene composites by D. Qian, E. C. Dickey, R. Andrews, and T. Rantell in Appl. Phys. Lett. 76, 2868 (2000).

UK CAER Catalysis Publications in "Most Cited" Category

The Clean Fuels and Chemical Research Group at the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research can lay claim to not one but two "most cited" papers in the area of applied catalysis research.

One of the most downloaded articles on the Applied Catalysis A web site is ... Fischer–Tropsch synthesis: Effect of Pd, Pt, Re, and Ru noble metal promoters on the activity and selectivity of a 25%Co/Al2O3 catalyst, by Wenping Ma, Gary Jacobs, Robert A. Keogh, Dragomir B.
