Mr. Matthew Simmons, author of "Twilight in the Desert," was the 2007 CAER Distinguished Lecturer on November 15th. A quick Google search gives 139,000 hits for Matthew Simmons. He is very much in the news now and the Center was extremely lucky to have him as this year's speaker. A video of the evening's lecture and a copy of his PPT is available below.

With the national debate over new alternative fuels increasing the issue of coal's place in supplying America's energy and fuel needs has taken on added importance in recent months. UK CAER ... is playing an important role ... by exploring ... the efficiency of converting coal to liquid fuels well in advance of national discussions of the process.
University of Kentucky's "At the Half" TV spot called "UK in the News" featured Center for Applied Energy Research's scientist, Dr. Burt Davis discussing this topic.

GOVERNOR FLETCHER ANNOUNCES STATE FUNDING FOR ENERGY RESEARCH:
These projects are targeted as advancing the goals of the Commonwealth’s Comprehensive Energy Strategy (http://www.energy.ky.gov/energyplan/).
Among the projects funded at the University of Kentucky, the following are located at the CAER:
- "Toward Understanding How Alkali Promoters Alleviate CO2 Production and Enhance
Chain Growth Probability Over Iron Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis Catalysts." The principal
investigator for this project is Dr. Gary Jacobs of the CAER. Total funding is $103,170.- "On-Site Thermochemical Densification of Biomass." This project is under the leadership
of Dr. Rodney Andrews, Director of the Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER).
Total funding is $133,124.- "Development of a Liquid Membrane for Solvent-Based Post-Combustion CO2
Scrubber." This project is under the leadership of Dr. Kunlei Liu, of the CAER. Total

When University of Kentucky's President Lee Todd talks about UK's pursuit of top 20 status, he always mentions the importance of doing research that positively impacts the citizens of the Commonwealth. And that type of work is definitely central to UK's Center for Applied Energy Research, a university-affiliated multi-disciplinary research facility.
Dr. Rodney Andrews, CAER Director, is interviewed during this 2 1/2 minute spot that was played during halftime of the UK men's basketball regular-season opening game held on November 6, 2007.

Rodney Andrews discusses CAER research with Carl Nathe at UKPR's recording studio.CAER was featured in audio and video media recently. UK's Department of Public Relations chose to highlight the CAER's 30th Anniversary by first broadcasting a short video of Associate Director Burt Davis and Director Rodney Andrews; and then airing a radio spot. Both stories were featured during half-time of the UK men's basketball games.
