The University of Kentucky's Center for Applied Energy Research has published its first podcast. Dr. Richard Sakurovs of CSIRO Energy Technology located in Australia was the latest speaker in the CAER Seminar Series and the first of CAER's podcast speakers. His presentation, "Sequestration Down Under", was accompanied by a powerpoint presentation.
Jim Hower receiving Cady award from Leslie Ruppert.Dr. James C. (Jim) Hower recently added to his collection of professional awards. He is the recipient of the 2006 Gilbert H. Cady Award, presented by the Coal Geology Division of the Geological Society of America (GSA). He received the award at the society’s recent annual meeting in Philadelphia, PA. This esteemed award is the highest in the field of coal geology.
His wealth of expertise is succinctly stated by Dr. Leslie Ruppert of the GSA, “Jim Hower has worked in almost every aspect of coal geology, including inorganic petrology, coal quality, coal combustion by-products, and environmental aspects of coal quality, coal combustion by-products, and environmental aspects of coal utilization. His work in applied coal and coal combustion by-product petrology is the benchmark in the U.S. coal research community. He is recognized as THE expert in Kentucky coal quality variation.”

(from left, Jack Groppo, Rodney Andrews (CAER Acting Director), and Tom RoblOn October 23rd Tom Robl and Jack Groppo could be found at the US EPA’s Coal Combustion Partnership Awards ceremony in Atlanta, where the two ECT Group members received an award a Special Recognition Award in Innovation. The award is for investigations of advanced coal by-product processing at the E.On-owned power plant in Ghent, Kentucky by researchers from CAER. The work was supported by a grant from the US DOE. In addition, this research has been recognized for its benefit to the Commonwealth of Kentucky and is designated a Commonwealth Collaborative project by UK.
The Coal Combustion Products Partnership (C2P2) program is a cooperative effort among the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, American Coal Ash Association, Utility Solid Waste Activities Group, US Department of Energy, and US Federal Highway Administration to help promote the beneficial use of Coal Combustion Products (CCPs) and the environmental benefits that result from their use.
