This week saw the completion of another successful International Ash Utilization Symposium. This year’s crowd of about 300 participants seemed to think it was the best in the series so far. The presenters, exhibitors, session chairs and organizers came together to create an educational, interactive, and enjoyable conference.
University of Kentucky President Lee Todd and Lexington Mayor Teresa Isaac opened the meeting. Four parallel sessions ran throughout the meeting. Topics ranged from environmental to utilization to concrete applications of ash. In addition to traditionally presented papers and posters, there was an informative government panel discussion, which highlighted current and upcoming regulatory requirements.
The two keynote speakers presented both a US and international perspective on ash utilization:
“Fly Ash in Concrete: What Do We Have to Do to Move Utilization Forward. A United Kingdom Perspective” presented by Dr. M. R. Jones, Head of the Division of Civil Engineering and Reader in Concrete Technology at the University of Dundee, Scotland.
“Coal as Key Energy Source - Dealing with its Byproducts as a National Issue” presented by Mr. Kenneth E. Markel, Deputy Center Director of the Office of Major Demonstration Projects at the U.S. Dept. of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory.
In addition to the technical meeting, there was time for fun and relaxation during a reception at Labrot and Graham bourbon distillery. The reception included a fascinating tour for both bourbon drinkers and teetotalers alike.
The organizers would like to once again thank all of the sponsors, exhibitors, presenters, session chairs, technical committee members, and the CAER administration who helped to make this meeting a success.

Dr. Uschi Graham was the key note speaker at the 2003 Painting Technology Workshop, held October 1-2 at the Hilton Suites, in Lexington, Kentucky. The title of her talk was “Using Nanotechnology: Toward Smart Coatings.”
