Centre College chemistry professor, Jennifer Muzyka, brought five students from Centre College to the CAER for a tour in July. UK chemistry professor and visiting scientist, Mark Meier, led the tour. Three of these students are supported by the UK-WV Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation grant from the national Science Foundation.

The Center for Applied Energy Research's (CAER) Clean Fuels and Chemicals Research Group at the University of Kentucky is ranking high in terms of articles published in "top download counts" within the Catalysis research field. In addition to a recent "top 50" ranking, the group is now recognized for TWO TOP 25 rankings ....
- The first is a TOP THREE rank within the "Top 25 Hottest Articles within the Journal of Catalysis according to ScienceDirect's January-March 2007 counts for ... Steam reforming of ethanol over PT/ceria with co-fed hydrogen (J Catal, v245, #2, Jan 2007 by Jacobs, Keogh, Davis).
- The second article is a TOP 24 rank within the "Top 25 Hottest Articles within the Applied Catalysis A journal according to ScienceDirect's January-March 2007 counts for ... Low temperature water-gas shift ... (Appl Catal A, v319, Mar 2007 by Pigos, Brooks, Jacobs, Davis).
Podcasts (audio recordings) of the 2007 World of Coal Ash (WOCA) Conference Plenary Speakers is now available via the CAER Web site or directly from the WOCA Conference Web site.
Plenary speakers included: Ms. Catherine Vial, Team Leader of the U.S. Department of Commerce; Ms. Maria Parisi Vickers, Deputy Director of the U.S. Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response; and Mr. John J. Roebel, Senior Vice President at Duke Energy.

Coal to Liquids (CTL) research is the topical focus of interviews with both Dr. Burt Davis and Dr. Rodney Andrews, Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER) scientists, made available via video in this Newswise article. Newswise is a service that is sent to and utilized by journalists across the country.
"As the national debate over energy independence intensifies, researchers at the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research are refining methods to convert coal into liquid fuel ..... A research institute at the University of Kentucky (the CAER), has been exploring ways to increase the efficiency of converting coal to liquid fuel well in advance of national discussions of the process."
The Kentucky Governor's Office of Energy Policy announced that it will provide funding to the University of Kentucky for energy research projects. The CAER received two awards:
“High Value Applications for Flue Gas Desulphurization Materials.” This project is under the leadership of Robert Rathbone, a geologist with the CAER. This is a two-year project with a total award of $102,866.
“Feasibility of Capture and Utilization of CO2 from Kentucky Power Plants by Algal Systems.” The lead researcher for this project is the CAER's Director, Dr. Rodney Andrews. Total funding is $47,156.

Darrell Taulbee, CAER scientist, was a headliner recently in the Lexington Herald-Leader newspaper. Read more about his research in coating potential volatile ammonium nitrate (used to make bombs) with coal ash to lessen the impact of potential explosions.
