Dr. Jacek Jagiello is a visiting scientist at the CAER. He has spent most of his professional life working on adsorption phenomena and studying adsorption properties of non-porous and porous materials - with special interest in understanding and characterization of activated carbons. He received his Doctorate in Chemistry at M. Curie-Sklodowska University, Lublin, Poland (1984). From 1988 to1990 he was a Postdoctoral Research Associate in CNRS (Centre National de la Recherché Scientifique) Mulhouse, France where he studied Inverse Gas Chromatography. His second Postdoctoral position was at Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York (1990-1996) where he worked on hydrogen and methane storage on activated carbons. In 1996, Dr. Jagiello moved from academic to industrial research when he joined the Carbon Research Group at the Charleston Technical Center of Westvaco Corporation (Charleston, South Carolina). His research projects were primarily related to the development of methods for characterization of activated carbons and to the pore structure-based modeling of carbon performance for specific applications. His last position was at Quantachrome. Dr. Jagiello has authored and co-authored more than 80 scientific publications including two book chapters, more than 20 presentations at international conferences and four U.S. patents.

Daniel Bortz, an undergraduate mechanical engineering student, who does research at CAER, has won the Capstone Design Award. In the mechanical engineering 411/412 Capstone Design course, students work in teams of four or five each to carry out a comprehensive design effort encompassing two semeters. The faculty coordinator reviews the suggested projects for appropriateness, and serves as the initial liaison with the sponsor. The student teams prepare the overall project plan, including detailed task lists and a schedule, followed by periodic progress reports during the semester. The students are expected to use engineering design and development tools and methods in completing their project, and to build on the coursework completed earlier in their studies. A central location for team meetings, experimentation, and prototyping is provided in the new Ralph G. Anderson Building. At the end of the semester, each team submits a final report and provides a final presentation.
Daniel's project was suggested by Harley Davidson. They constucted a stand capable of running a 96 cubic inch Harley Davidson motorcycle engine that was donated to the university. The purpose of this stand is to later be able to conduct vibration analysis on a newly designed external component of the engine.
Based upon their final presentation, the Cummins Outstanding Mechanical Engineering Senior Design Award was given to the first place team selected by a Cummins representative in conjunction with a group of faculty for design creativity and overall team achievement. There were 19 teams in the running for this award.Posted by Marybeth McAlister [Link]
