05/25/2012 Archived Entry: "Kentucky CRERES Group Tours UK CAERís New Renewables Laboratory"
The Center for Renewable Energy Research and Environmental Stewardship (CRERES) toured the new University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Researchís CAER Lab #2, which is the centerís newly-built high-performance laboratory which allows significant expansion of our renewable and energy storage research capabilities.
The new facility includes labs for process development, prototype manufacturing and testing as well as applied research on batteries, capacitors, solar energy materials and biofuels.
The Kentucky Biofuels Laboratory, an analytical laboratory managed as an open access user facility, will be located within the building as well a new solar lab which will be made available to local industry, to assist in establishing a PV manufacturing infrastructure in central Kentucky.
Additionally a portion of the new facility will be equipped specifically for capacitor and battery manufacturing research in which the UK CAER Electrochemical Power Sources Research Group will be involved with the Kentucky-Argonne Battery Manufacturing Research and Development Center through the development of new cell fabrication and manufacturing processes for advanced lithium-ion batteries used for portable and bulk storage, as well as for the transportation sector.
