05/04/2011 Archived Entry: "Former CAER Student Returns in Role of Energy Extension Agent"
The CAER would like to welcome the newest member of our regional outreach group. Sarah Mardon will act as our Energy Coordinator for western Kentucky.
Sarah comes to us with a wealth of experience, including an institutional knowledge of the CAER. She performed research here under Dr. James Hower, both as an undergraduate and graduate student in UK’s Department of Geology.
In the intervening years she gained professional experience through her work as a coal geologist for Pearson Petrographic Services, as an Admissions Counselor for UK, and as an Environmental Technologist with the Commonwealth’s Division of Water and most recently, the Division of Abandoned Mine Lands.
The Energy Extension Agent program began in 2008 with agent Greg Copley in eastern Kentucky’s West Liberty office. CAER’s energy officers can be thought of as energy ‘extension’ agents, much like the well-known Agriculture Extension Agents, who can be found in each of Kentucky’s 122 counties.
Regional Offices consult and encourage partnerships between groups outside the central part of the state and CAER, along with other UK energy groups. In her role as regional energy coordinator, Mardon will be working with businesses, local governments, and educational entities providing energy-related technical assistance and outreach.
She says, “When I was a UK recruiter, I traveled to the far corners of the state. I’m excited about now serving as a link between our flagship university and the entrepreneurs, educators, and others interested in energy throughout the western part of the commonwealth.”
Mardon will replace Dr. John Dunaway, who originally held this position before his retirement.
