09/22/2009 Archived Entry: "CAER Sustainable Research Seen by Campus Tour Group"
Big Blue Went Green and came to the CAER. As part of the university's push to make students, staff and faculty aware of the greening of UK, the university is in the middle of a two-week series of lectures, tours, and online educational events with the goal of advertising its entities' sustainability initiatives. At the CAER, the group toured the algae green house, the emissions control lab, briquetted fuels lab, electrochemistry lab and the coal combustion by-products/low-energy cements area. KGS representatives also explained their work on carbon sequestration.
Sponsored by the UK Presidentís Sustainability Advisory Committee and the Office of Facilities Management, the two-week event showcases new opportunities in research and teaching, business operations, and outreach and community engagement at UK. The Sustainability Showcase includes a local foods tasting, tours, presentations, a gardening workshop and an open house on cutting-edge research.
Additionally, the campus community can participate in the Sustainability Pledge that focuses on things individuals can do daily that will promote economic vitality, ecological integrity and social justice. By pledging to undertake some of these activities individuals are making a commitment to build a sustainable campus for this generation and for generations to come.
