A group at Cornell University was searching for carbon-based materials to replace expensive, rigid silicon in solar cells to convert light to energy. Professor John Anthony, UK Department of Chemistry, worked with these scientists to develop carbon materials that can be painted onto surfaces to yield nanostructured films that perform this energy conversion. The pictures shown above are microscope images showing the different structures the materials that form after the painted films dry.
