Dr. James C. (Jim) Hower recently added to his collection of professional awards. He is the recipient of the 2006 Gilbert H. Cady Award, presented by the Coal Geology Division of the Geological Society of America (GSA). He received the award at the society’s recent annual meeting in Philadelphia, PA. This esteemed award is the highest in the field of coal geology.

His wealth of expertise is succinctly stated by Dr. Leslie Ruppert of the GSA, “Jim Hower has worked in almost every aspect of coal geology, including inorganic petrology, coal quality, coal combustion by-products, and environmental aspects of coal quality, coal combustion by-products, and environmental aspects of coal utilization. His work in applied coal and coal combustion by-product petrology is the benchmark in the U.S. coal research community. He is recognized as THE expert in Kentucky coal quality variation.”
