The Center has a model (and award winning) environmental health and safety program, and an excellent record of compliance with various regulatory requirments for air, water and solid/hazardous waste disposal. The program is managed by the Center's Safety Committee. It includes on-site first aid responders; training and orientation; health screening; labeling and information; inspection and monitoring; material handling and disposal; protective equipment and apparel; communications; accident investigation and reporting; and response and recovery activities.

The laboratory itself is equipped with various safety devices (eye and body washes); gas monitoring and dectection devices; acid-proof drains; a settling basin for solids; baffles to lesson noise pollution; and stack scrubbers for air emission control.
